When we talk about hosting web servers, there are 3 main categories - hosting servers, VPS (virtual servers) and dedicated servers. Shared web servers accommodate a lot of clients and thus the system resources per hosting account are restricted, VPS give you more server configuration autonomy, but also influence other virtual web servers on the hardware node if used rashly, and dedicated servers offer you the autonomy to carry out everything you decide without messing with anyone else.

Why would you need a dedicated servers?

Dedicated servers are traditionally much more high-priced than shared hosting servers or virtual private web servers. Why would anyone, then, want to use them? The answer is very simple. If your corporation has a large-scale online portal, or simply has very specific web server setup requirements, the wisest choice is a dedicated servers. For somebody who is inclined to invest in security and reliability, the higher price is not a concern. You are bestowed with full root privileges and can use 100 percent of the dedicated hosting server's system resources without anyone else sharing these system resources and messing with your online portals.

Hardware architectures

Most website hosting companies, incl. us at ArtMotion, provide several hardware configurations you can select from in consonance with your requirements. The hardware architectures offer different types of microprocessors, a different amount of cores, different RAM and disk drive sizes and different web traffic usage quotas. You can select a hosting CP, which is a handy user interface if you wish to utilize the dedicated servers for web hosting purposes solely and choose not to resort to a Secure Shell client for all the changes you will be making. We provide 3 kinds of Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The hosting CP of your choice

If you are a self-assured Linux user (our dedicated hosting servers are powered by Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could manage your dedicated servers through SSH only. That, though, could be inconvenient, even more so if you decide to give full server root access to someone else who has less technical proficiency than yourself. That is why having hosting Control Panel software installed is an intelligent idea. The Hepsia web hosting CP interface that we provide does not offer full server root access and is chiefly suitable for somebody who maintains plenty of web portals that consume lots of resources, but would like to administer the sites, databases and e-mailbox accounts via a user-friendly hosting Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel Control Panels, on the other hand, give you complete root-level access and have three access levels - root, reseller and user. If you intend to resell hosting packages instead of utilizing the dedicated servers only for yourself, you should select one of these two.

Server monitoring and backup services

Last but not least, there is the issue of monitoring the dedicated servers and of backing it up. In the event of a problem with your web server, such as an unresponsive Apache or an outage, it is useful to have some kind of monitoring platform activated. Here at ArtMotion the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you order a Managed Services upgrade, they monitor the separate services on the dedicated servers as well. Backups are also an extra feature - the hosting distributor offers you data backups on our own backup servers. You could select a type of RAID that would permit you to keep the same data on 2 server hard disk drives as a precaution in case of a server hard disk drive failure, or in case someone whom you have ranted full server root access deletes something accidentally.
